Fabulous
I have put about 30 hours of break-in on the Audion and it is sounding fabulous. It is exceeding all my expectations. I'll give you an additional report when it reaches that 100 hour mark you recommended.
As you'll read below, this MM phono retains punch, rhythm and pace. Celebrate the low price, but don't be fooled you're sacrificing much....Mini Review by True Audiophile.
Plenty of Punch
"Often, tubes, especially at the lower end of the price scale, conjure thoughts associated with a lack of pace—and warm, gooey sound that has a romantic feel absent any rhythmic drive or snap. The Premier never suffers this problem. A quick spin of Sheep on Drugs’ “Acid Test” from their Greatest Hits possesses the requisite dimensions of altered-reality club music played at discotheque volume levels. Beats hit hard while staying clean and segregated from the piercing synthesizer tracks. Records like this—i.e., those are not audiophile treasures—easily illustrate just how much resolution is available in the grooves. Lesser preamplifiers just let the presentation coagulate, and make the music sound like a big ball of midrange. ...the Audion Premier is a product with which you can happily live and exists as proof that you don’t have to spend five figures to attain lovely analog sound. Mate it with the right cartridge, and you may never get the urge to buy a MC cartridge—it’s that good. But should you be taken with such a desire, Audion makes an MC step-up that needs only to be plugged into the Premier, making the latter fully capable of MC use". -- Jeff Dorgay, Analogaholic - Read full review here.
This Audion phono amp is active Class A stage using a transformer less design, which means matching is very easy. It is far less critical of capacitance, resistance, impedance, inductance or reactance matching that transformer couple RIAA stages normally need.
With the Audion Premier MM Phono Stage the soundstage is believably big, and allows the recording’s capabilities to shine through. Musicians are convincingly placed. Noise level is pitch black. Roll off in both directions is seamless. Resolution is astounding, with absolutely convincing depth even at very low listening levels. It does not beautify bad records, but it gives sparkle to great recordings, and preserves tonality, rhythm and sense of space. We refer to this as being neutral, but not sterile or warm or tubelike.
The Audion Premier chassis is black powder coated aluminum as is the transformer cover. The top plate and badge are mirror finished stainless steel. The Phono MM stage uses NOS Russian 6H23N tubes, it also has a ground lift switch at the rear to assist in resolving grounding issues by floating the ground internally above mains ground.
