Part-Time Audiophile Reviews the amp:
Holy $h&t. Listening to this record I was in the Village Vanguard about 2 or 3 rows back from the edge of the stage.
Over the weeks I cycled through all my usual suspects of records and a handful of CDs with a smattering of streaming.
Time after time the old chestnuts gained new life from the Hungarian Tube Gods.
Big, raging dynamic contrasts when that was on the recording. Intimate small scale stuff was seductive in a different way. The Beach Boys’ Smile in mono was sublime.
I couldn’t find a recording that didn’t sound musically involving when played through the Audio Hungary Qualiton APX 200 amp.
Something about the combination of textures, imaging, and dynamic contrasts hit me directly in the sweet spot. Very occasionally I wanted a slightly cleaner something to the high mids/low treble, but that was more due to a less than amazing sounding recording, cause I pulled out a lot more than the audiophile jams.
the area from the mid-bass to the low treble, the Qualiton consistently presented more meat on the bones around the upper bass, but without sounding bloated or underdamped.
high-mid/low-treble area is like vividly visible wood grain on a fine piece of hand-oiled hardwood furniture.
I liked the presentation of dynamics, midrange tonality, and imaging more when listening to the APX 200.
But the real news is that this is a 100 watt per channel, well designed and built, pure tube signal path design with all the revered sonic qualities of a very high-end and typically very expensive power amp, yet can be had for the asking price ...
The Audio Hungary Qualiton APX 200 will be at home in systems with a phono cartridge or DAC costing twice its price. It’s a steal. Highly recommended.
It’s a steal. Highly recommended. Full review here.
Mono and Stereo says:
Its is even more encouraging, when something works beyond expected and differ enough to stand out of the crowd. Like with many products coming in and out of Mono & Stereo HQ’s, I really didn’t know exactly, what to expect with Qualitons. Of course… I did my homework and lurk into the technical materials and specs before the initial evaluation momentum. Still, in our field you cannot exactly envision the exact sonic scenario. And at the end its the sound that holds the highest merit...
Audio Hungary Qualiton APX 200 and APR 204 brings a refreshing impact at the price point, that will open many doors. The sonic potency of Qualtions resolve with controlled power and with musicality, that can “glue” one into a prolonged music listening.
For the value and the level of the sonic performance, that they’re bringing I’m happily awarding both Audio Hungary Qualtion APX 200 AND APR 204 with the Mono and Stereo Best Buy Award.
The APX 200 delivers fully 2 x 100 W, and is consequently able to dynamically operate very insensitive speakers. This is achieved by a pair of EL509 / PL519 / 6P45S tubes per channel operating partially in Class A (~12W) and predominantly in Class AB afterwards. The input and driver duties are handled via two 6N23P and two 12AX7LP tubes.
The frequency response is fully linear in audio-frequency, at nominal, i.e. 100 W output power, measured with sinusoidal waveform. The low frequency breakpoint of the frequency response is 15 Hz, the upper cutoff frequency is 100 kHz (-3 dB points). In the entire audio-frequency range, the total harmonic distortion is less than 1% and the signal-to-noise ratio of the appliance is typically higher than 101 dB. While developing this product, the listed technical parameters were attained due to carefully designed circuit arrangements, a selected set of vacuum tubes and an accurately dimensioned and a manufactured output transformer.
The vacuum tube set protection is handled with special care. The lifespan of the tubes can be drastically reduced by uncontrolled transient surges of current at the moment of power-on. Similarly, suddenly switching high anode voltage on non-preheated vacuum tubes can have an adverse effect on the lifespan. In order to eliminate those effects, the appliance is equipped with a slow-start circuit and an anode voltage delay circuit.
