Most Significant Analog Products at RMAF --Hana ML moving-coil cartridge
As usual, Musical Surroundings debuted a number of enticing high-performance analog components at RMAF. Of particular note were its Hana “M-series” moving-coil cartridges, which feature Delrin cartridge bodies to dampen resonances and allow more low-level details to emerge, as well as nude microline styli, aluminum cantilevers, high-purity copper wire, and cryogenic processing of the front yoke and center and rear components. Hana’s M-series cartridges come in both high- and low-output versions. The low-output Hana ML ($1200) was not out of place in one of the best-sounding systems at RMAF. The sound was big and bold on a Gershwin album and seductive on female vocals. I thought I was listening to a much more expensive cartridge, which makes the Hana ML a great value. -- The Absolute Sound

We know what everyone wants to know. How much better? What is the differences between these cartridges and the lower priced Hana?

Vinyl-savvy music lovers will probably be familiar with the Hana range of high-output and low-output MC phono cartridges.

Manufactured in Japan by the Excel Sound Corporation, they’ve been lauded for their strong performance/value ratio.

The current two-model range, offered in both high-output and low-output flavours, has just been augmented by a third version. The new M-Series also comes in MH high-output and ML low-output versions, but features an extensive array of upgrades compared to the E and S ranges.

Chief among those is a cartridge body made of Delrin, as opposed to ABS plastic. Delrin is a more stable and acoustically inert material, making it less susceptible to resonance and vibration.

The M-Series employs a micro-line stylus, promising enhanced detail retrieval and improved frequency reproduction. All the electromotive components of the cartridge are cryogenically treated.

The process is said to uniformly stabilise the conductive particles for improved signal transfer and accuracy. Finally, the purity of the copper wiring employed in the coils has also been upgraded in order to reduce distortion and improve clarity.

In addition to the M-Series, Hana has also added a mono model to the S-Series range. The twin-coil design features a Shibata stylus and has been optimised for older mono recordings. -- AV Magazine

In a quest to save lower end TT owners from themselves and dealers who will show them whatever at whatever price without concern for the performance, we continually listen and search. The NEW Hana M series follows up on the E and S with stunning performance for a small investment -- TA

Hand-Made Hana MH and ML Moving-Coil Cartridges Offer Outrageously Good Performance: Precisely Fit into Vinyl Grooves, Extract Rich Detail, Provide Stellar Damping, Play with Lush Linearity

Higher-specifications parts, extra-pure copper wiring, Delrin cartridge bodies, cryogenically processed materials, and threaded headshell fittings all equate to deluxe performance from Hana M Series MH and ML moving-coil cartridges. Devised to more precisely fit into vinyl grooves and provide exceptional damping, the Japanese-made models extract information with archeological-like purpose and expertise – all while proving among the most linear, extended, dynamic, and consistent cartridges anywhere near their price class. The only difference between the models: MH is high-output (2mV) while ML is low-output (0.4mV).

Befitting its name, the hand-assembled M Series uses a nude microline stylus that mimics the form of a cutting stylus and fits more precisely into the vinyl groove. The design also enhances tracking to capture the most delicate details with better frequency reproduction, imaging, and resolution. In the moving-coil windings themselves, high-purity copper wire offers greater clarity. ML features a new low-impedance generator for optimized performance with a broader range of phono preamps.

Injection-molded from Delrin, a high-tech polymer with improved mechanical characteristics for better resonance damping, M Series' cartridge bodies reveal copious amounts of low-level information and extend the dynamic range. Metal threaded fittings for headshell-mounting hardware are also built into the body, offering easy attachment and superior mechanical interface for attention-getting bass and frequency response. The body also features an integral machined brass cap for constrained-mode layer damping. And its 9.5-gram weight provides stellar compatibility with a wider range of tonearms and turntables.

Cryogenic processing, which restructures metals at the molecular level, is especially beneficial in Alnico-based magnetic electro-motive circuitry (cartridge signal generator). Cryogenically treated M Series parts include the front yoke as well as center and rear components, yielding more a precise and controlled magnetic flux field for greater linearity and overall sonics.

In sum, Hana M Series has everything – and much more – offered by many more expensive cartridges. If you haven't yet experienced the gorgeous sound afforded by Hana, there's never been a better time.
